Here is the question you are answering with this outline: Thoroughly Discuss the Causes and Effects of the Depression? What were the various solutions? What were criticisms leveled at the New Deal? How effective was the New Deal? What were it’s lasting effects? I have included some 'prompting' lines around the way to help you understand the process.
I Intro- Before the great depression their was an economic boom so big that everyone felt the wealth. From being buying on credit and large production with faked numbers everyone was living the rich life. sadly however this fake paradise came to a hard close on black tuesday when everything was lost, Their jobs, savings, and consumer goods. With 25 percent unemployment and no end in sight what could americans do?
II Causes (The causes of the great depression were
A overspeculation- People believed that economy would continue to get better even though they had already been to high.
B Govt Policy- Their was no control on the banks or financial systems so when they collapsed their was no help from the government.
C Unstable Econ- Everyone was buying on credit with fake money not really owning anything.
1 uneven prosperity- the rich were really rich and the poor were extremely poor.
2 overproduction- Before the crash companies were producing more products then the economy demanded and fired more workers. this caused people to loose there jobs making even less people purchase there goods. the over production also led to driving the costs down which led to more people getting laid off.
3 worker issues- More lay offs, less jobs everywhere,
farm issues- overproduction led to low prices, no demand, and drove the small farms out of business.
III Effects
A Poverty Some people starved, others roamed the us for any work.
B Society Many things changed during the depression. More divorce, scuicide rate rose, less kids attended school, many businesses died, mass migration.
C World- during the 1920's the world began to lean towards a single world market with the loans and war debts of europe coming america. So when america sneezed the whole world caught a cold. America, germany and England were hurt the most during the depression. the rest of the world began to follow.
IV Solutions- Public works, volunteerism, Government intervention. Reconstruction finance corporations
A Hoover- Hoover was president during the beginning of the great depression. He was conservative and never truly gave anything everything he had. He tested many things to see if they would help but never full heartedly tried.
1 Volunteerism- Government Projects designed to help out all the people out of work.
2 Public Works- government funded building projects.
3 Hawley Smoot- Put a huge tarrif on foreign goods to protect the american companies and eliminate foreign competition however this backfired when countries did the same.
4 RFC- Reconstruction finance Corporation- made loas to banks, railroads and agricultural institutions.
B Roosevelt- President Franklin D. Roosevelt won the election in 1932.
1 new deal- in his public address speech He said," I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the american people." the new deal stands for all the programs of reform for ending the depression.
a alphabet soup
The nickname given to all the acronyms of government agencies made in 1938 during FDR's presidency. Agencies such as NSA,CIA, FBI, ect.
b Criticsim?
2 2nd new deal
a Improved Use of American Resources.
b security against old age, unemployment and illness, and slum clearance, as well as a national welfare program
c programs to redistribute wealth, income and power in favor of the poor, the old, farmers and labor unions.
V Criticicism
B Political Criticism (ex. Came from both the Right and the left)
A Conservatives- Said he was spending to much and interfering to much with the economy.
B Liberals (ex: criticised the new deal also. They said that he was not doing enough to get the economy stable again.
VI Effectiveness
A Changes in US- Although there was a recession in 1937 the unemployed greatly diminished from the hight of the depression. The government had also greatly expanded with a lot more power and influence in the economy with a much more programs.
B Unions- Unions gained a lot more power and influence for workers rights.
C Culture- People became more about the whole of america then themselves. We became isolationists and wanted to focus on building a better america before policing the world.
VII Conclusion- With all the progress made durring the New deals would send america off into world war 2 one short year later better on its feet than it was but still in a recession. All these programs gave a lot of help where needed yet never got the people out of the depression.
