Jupiter-C Explorer 1 January 31st. 1958

Jupiter-c Explorer 1

Jupiter-c Explorer 1 was the first successful US. Rocket to be launched into space. The official name was known as satellite 1958 alpha. The satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral (now Cape Kennedy) in Florida at 10:48 P.M. EST on 31 January 1958. The Jupiter-c was designed by the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA). The Rocket was used to test the reentry nose cones for later more sophisticated models. Before this attempt there had a been a long road to get where they were. since the american quest for space travel more than 160 launch attempts have failed. Now a lot of these failures have occurred after Jupiter-C Explorer 1 however it expresses the complexity of the space race and the importance of our successful launch. Besides man desire to explore the unknown one of the main reasons the race to space was so important was the russian satellite sputnik. Sputnik allowed for russia to see the activity of the globe giving them technology that the all mighty U.S. did not. Soon Billions would be invested by the two countries to build upon and further the achievements of sputnik and Jupiter-C Explorer1.

This moment in time was the morning after the first successful launch. It is of the van burren rocket team holding up a scaled module of the Jupiter-C Explorer1. This image captured the excitement and passion of the William H. Pickering, James van Allen and Wernher von Braun  who were responsible for the successful launch. This launch will be the turning point in history for the united states space exploration and ignite a generation to continue to pursue. even to this day we've continued to grow and expand upon the knowledge we've gained since this historic day.

Study Review, open book test. Put on Blog.

Write down and fill in this outline. Then, go back and create an introduction and conclusion. You will get 5 points (max) for each roman numeral. You will receive a max of 35 for the outline. We will have class time (2 days, but not the full class). Then it will be due.

Here is the question you are answering with this outline: Thoroughly Discuss the Causes and Effects of the Depression? What were the various solutions? What were criticisms leveled at the New Deal? How effective was the New Deal? What were it’s lasting effects? I have included some 'prompting' lines around the way to help you understand the process.

I Intro- Before the great depression their was an economic boom so big that everyone felt the wealth. From being buying on credit and large production with faked numbers everyone was living the rich life. sadly however this fake paradise came to a hard close on black tuesday when everything was lost, Their jobs, savings, and consumer goods. With 25 percent unemployment and no end in sight what could americans do?

II Causes (The causes of the great depression were
A overspeculation- People believed that economy would continue to get better even though they had already been to high.

B Govt Policy- Their was no control on the banks or financial systems so when they collapsed their was no help from the government.

C Unstable Econ- Everyone was buying on credit with fake money not really owning anything.

1 uneven prosperity- the rich were really rich and the poor were extremely poor.

2 overproduction- Before the crash companies were producing more products then the economy demanded and fired more workers. this caused people to loose there jobs making even less people purchase there goods. the over production also led to driving the costs down which led to more people getting laid off.

3 worker issues- More lay offs, less jobs everywhere,
farm issues- overproduction led to low prices, no demand, and drove the small farms out of business.

III Effects

A Poverty Some people starved, others roamed the us for any work.
B Society Many things changed during the depression. More divorce, scuicide rate rose, less kids attended school, many businesses died, mass migration.

C World- during the 1920's the world began to lean towards a single world market with the loans and war debts of europe coming america. So when america sneezed the whole world caught a cold. America, germany and England were hurt the most during the depression. the rest of the world began to follow.

IV Solutions- Public works, volunteerism, Government intervention. Reconstruction finance corporations

A Hoover- Hoover was president during the beginning of the great depression. He was conservative and never truly gave anything everything he had. He tested many things to see if they would help but never full heartedly tried.

1 Volunteerism- Government Projects designed to help out all the people out of work.

2 Public Works- government funded building projects.

3 Hawley Smoot- Put a huge tarrif on foreign goods to protect the american companies and eliminate foreign competition however this backfired when countries did the same.

4 RFC- Reconstruction finance Corporation- made loas to banks, railroads and agricultural institutions.

B Roosevelt- President Franklin D. Roosevelt won the election in 1932.

1 new deal- in his public address speech He said," I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the american people." the new deal stands for all the programs of reform for ending the depression.

a alphabet soup
The nickname given to all the acronyms of government agencies made in 1938 during FDR's presidency. Agencies such as NSA,CIA, FBI, ect.
b Criticsim?

2 2nd new deal
a Improved Use of American Resources.

security against old age, unemployment and illness, and slum clearance, as well as a national welfare program

programs to redistribute wealth, income and power in favor of the poor, the old, farmers and labor unions.

V Criticicism

B Political Criticism (ex. Came from both the Right and the left)

A Conservatives- Said he was spending to much and interfering to much with the economy.

B Liberals (ex: criticised the new deal also. They said that he was not doing enough to get the economy stable again.

VI Effectiveness

A Changes in US- Although there was a recession in 1937 the unemployed greatly diminished from the hight of the depression. The government had also greatly expanded with a lot more power and influence in the economy with a much more programs.

B Unions- Unions gained a lot more power and influence for workers rights.

C Culture- People became more about the whole of america then themselves. We became isolationists and wanted to focus on building a better america before policing the world.

VII Conclusion- With all the progress made durring the New deals would send america off into world war 2 one short year later better on its feet than it was but still in a recession. All these programs gave a lot of help where needed yet never got the people out of the depression.

World War II Propaganda Posters

During World War 2 from 1938-1945 each country had its own wartime propaganda posters. Propaganda posters are informational ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movementinstitution, nation, etc. All of of these Propaganda posters used the fear of the population to get them to act or believe the way someone else wants. Since I cannot read most other languages I can only understand American and British posters. In America these posters were used for a wide variety of topics. Some posters were designed to make you enlist yourself into the army, or to save materials during wartime. However all these posters used the same techniques. Most used over exaggerated depictions of Japanese soldiers that took the features commonly known for to make them look inhuman or monstrous. By using the fear of a Japanese controlled America they were able to convince most Americans of the importance of their message. As well as using posters for fear some were used for inspiration. Iconic posters such as the women factory worker saying, "we can do it" were ones to get people involved with the wartime effort. Along with the American “We can do it”, we have the British’s "women of Britain come to the factories".  Another common propaganda poster theme was to get Americans to buy war bonds so people would keep paying to fight the good fight. These posters were created in fear, patriotism, and etc. The Final theme that was present during my research was the sex appeal. Beautiful women sprawled across war machinery and in flirtatious conversation with soldiers were designed to appeal to young men to enlist for the war. So that is what people did these effective posters captured the public and convinced them to follow these instructions to insure the victory over the malicious powers of the axis powers and there fight for world dominance.

Charles Lindberg flight 1927

Charles Lindbergh

Born: February 4th 1902 - died August 26th, 1974
Charles Lindbergh came out of the shadows from obscurity on may 20th, 1927. He earned international fame over night when he flew non stop to make the first trans-atlantic flight from roosevelt field New York, to Le Bourget field in France. He was the first man to be in the Americas one day and Europe the next. For this exploit he received the militaries highest decoration, the medal of honor. Aside from fame he was also the first man that the french raised the american flag for other then delegates  Other odds and ends to support his flight were the 10 cent us postal stamp issued with the spirit (his plane) printed out for the american public.

through the rest of his life Charles was a inventor, explorer, environmentalist, and prize winning author. Although his life was not all glamor, in march of 1932 his infant son was kidnaped. Charles Jr. was kidnapped on march 1st 1932 from his crib at just 20 months old. sadly however even with the whole nation searching and the ransom paid the child's remains were found on march 12th. This kidnapping was known as the crime of the century and resulted in congress passing a law to make kidnaping a federal offense.

These are only mere glimpses of the interesting life of Charles Lindbergh. He was a very involved man weather it was his opinions on hot topic issues and involvment in modern innovations.

Jungle investigation/interpretation

1. To survive and succeed in packing town you must aquire the art of desception. All the business wanted was to keep their secrets and to outperform each other. You had to be a hard fast worker to survive the company but to rise through its ranks you must spy and betray the man above you.

2. As a plant owner all you could ever want is to have work done aas quickly as possible. Many men would work themselves so hard right out of the job where a new man would take his place. The owner did not care how things were done as long as it was inexpensive and made him maximum profit.

3.A man was worth anything only the dollars he made was his worth. Money was worth more than human life thats all anyone cared about.

Research: Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906. After the publication of the jungle’s expose on the meat packing industry president theodore roosevelt launched an investigation of the meat packing industry. The results were shocking and revolted the investigators who saw the facility. Their reports ended in Roosevelt supporting the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA). Now Plants are inspected regularly to ensure that meat is processed in a sanitary manner. There were four main points in the (FMIA)
Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906:
1. Mandatory inspection of animals before slaughter
2. Mandatory inspection of post mortem carcass
3. Sanitary standards established for slaughterhouses and meat processing plants.
4. Authorized U.S. Department of Agriculture ongoing monitoring and inspection of slaughter and processing operations.

Why Would Spain Sink the Maine?

Why Would Spain Sink the Maine?

Put yourself in the position of Spain. Your empire is crumbling before your very eyes. Your colonies are slipping out of your grasp and people are generally displeased with your treatment of your people. Even worse though is there is a new rising world power, America! You know that people have mixed ideas of imperialism and slowly they are looking for a reason to police The world and expand there influence on other countries creating bonds to trade on. With all this resting on the line While a few men such as President Mckinley hold back the dis-comtempt of the people why would you sink a boat you know would result in war.
With all this going on the spanish also invited us to come to Cuba. they had us join them for dinner on the ship for americans to enjoy. The spanish military may not of liked us much but to keep there fragile empire from war the only chance Spain had was to have us at bay. However with americans ready for war and yellow journalism Bashing the spanish Mckinley had no choice but to go to war so to stay popular with the people.
"Both the Spanish and American governments investigated the explosion.  Neither could produce reasonably conclusive evidence, and each blamed the other.  The Spanish said it was an accident, and while the US didn't rule this out, they said the Spanish somehow caused it."
http://library.thinkquest.org/18355/the_sinking_of_the_uss_maine.html
This was in conclusion of the first investigation of the sinking later to be disproven by National Geographic Society when they did an investigation in 1999. All investigations agreed that an explosion of the forward magazines caused the destruction of the ship, but different conclusions were reached as to how the magazines could have exploded
Weather this explosion was an accident or sabotage  we can likely agree that it was not in Spains interest to go to war with america leaving it to Self sabotage or Cuban rebels who would have gained most in seeking americas help. By blowing up the ship cuban rebels would have finally given america the incentive they lacked to go to war.
Some conclude that The US may have been involved wishing to go to war as to try new military might and further economic gain in Journalism.
